Master 100-ton Class

Firstly, the Master 100-ton class, is a ten-day, $1,300 class. This is also the first class in the three-class sequence for Apprentice Mate (steersman) of Towing. The next class in this sequence is the Upgrade 100 to 200-ton.

Secondly, this class will satisfy the US Coast Guard exam requirements for the OUPV (6-pack) captain license and the Master 25, 50, or 100-ton license with either a Near Coastal or Inland route.

To explain the routes. The Inland route includes all federally navigable inland waters of the United States. The Near Coastal route includes all inland waters and the near coastal ocean waters within 200-miles of the US for the Master license, and within 100-miles of the US for the OUPV license.

Thirdly, the class includes instruction and assessment in five exam subjects. These subjects include navigation general, chart navigation, Rules of the Road. deck general, and safety and environmental protection.

Fourthly, the US Coast Guard approval for this class states:

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Master 100 Tons (COLPAC-281) course within one year of application will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j) (1) for original issuance, 46 CFR 10. 227(e)(1)(iii) for renewal, and 46 CFR 10.227(i) for reissuance of: A Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters); AND Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters).

License Information

Firstly, while the OUPV (6-pack) and the Master 100-ton are the same class, they are different licenses.

Secondly, all applications for Master or OUPV (6-pack) require 90-days of recent experience. To explain, recent experience is in the past 3-years.

OUPV (6-pack) License

The holder of a 6-pack license may operate an uninspected passenger vessel of less than 100 GRT (about 65-feet) carrying six (6) or fewer passengers, not counting the crew or operator. To qualify for the OUPV license you must be able to document the following experience in the operation of vessels.

  • OUPV (6-pack) Inland requires a total of 360-days.
  • OUPV (6-pack) Near Coastal requires a total of 360-days that includes 90-days on ocean waters (seaward of the COLREGS Demarcation Line). To clarify, the COLREGS Demarcation Line is a line drawn between the ends of the jetties.

Master 100-ton License

The holder of a Master 25, 50, or 100-ton license may operate an uninspected passenger vessel less than 100 GRT carrying six (6) or fewer passengers. Additionally, they may operate an inspected vessel carrying more than six passengers within the tonnage limits and route on the license. The Master may also operate any crew boat, work boat, supply boat, or oil industry vessel within the limits on the license.
