Upgrade 100 to 200-ton Class

Firstly, the Upgrade 100 to 200-ton Class is a four-day, $700 class. Additionally, this is the second class in the three-class sequence for Apprentice Mate (steersman) of Towing. Therefore, this 100 to 200-ton upgrade class is always scheduled after the Master 100-ton class.

Secondly, this class will satisfy the USCG exams for the raise in grade of a Master 100 to 200-ton. Meaning that, to qualify for this class you must have a Master 25, 50, or 100-ton license. OR, you must have completed the Master 100-ton class within one-year prior to taking this class.

Thirdly, the US Coast Guard approval for this class states:

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Upgrade Master 100 Tons to Master 200 Tons (Near Coastal) (COLPAC-526) course and presents your Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy the examination requirements for upgrade of a merchant mariner endorsement as Master not more than 100 gross tons (or Self-Propelled vessels of less than 100 Gross Registered Tons) Upon Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters to Master or Mate of Self-Propelled vessels of less than 200 Gross Registered Tons Upon Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters.

Upgrade 100 to 200-ton License Information

Here is the good news and bad news about the 100 to 200-ton license upgrade.

The bad news. You need experience as master or mate while holding a license to qualify as Master 200-ton.

The good news. You can qualify for a Mate 200-ton without experience as master or mate. AND you can upgrade from Mate 200-ton to Master 200-ton without any classes or exams. Consequently, you do not need to qualify as Master to take this class.

Recent experience needed. All applications for Master or Mate require 90-days of recent experience. Recent experience is within the past 3-years.

Commercial vessels that operate more than 12-hours out of a 24-hour day must have a second operator onboard. The second operator can be a licensed Master or Mate.

Mate 200-ton License

Master 200-ton License

To qualify as Master 200-ton the applicant must have experience as master, mate, or operator while holding a license. In addition, tonnage limitations apply.
