Able Seafarer (AB) Class

This Able Seafarer (AB) Class will satisfy the training, exam, and practical skill assessments described in 46 CFR 12.405 for any AB rating.

This five-day class is scheduled Monday through Friday as needed to meet demand.

  • Able Seafarer (AB) Class cost: $800 (this includes the $200 deposit required to register).

Able Seafarer (AB) Class Overview

During this 5-day class instruction is provided in four subject areas, including Navigation, Rules of the Road, Deck General, and Safety.

The Deck General subject includes daily hands-on lessons in the application of knots and splices commonly used in the maritime industry.

At the end of the class the student must pass two fifty-question multiple-choice exams with a minimum score of 70% correct answers.

  • Navigation and Rules of the Road exam.
  • Deck General and Safety exam.

Additionally, the student must also pass a practical Marlinespike Seamanship knot and splice assessment.


Able Seafarer (AB) Info

There are six AB ratings based on the mariner’s sea service experience.

Therefore, advancement to a higher AB is base of sea time alone, no class or exams needed.

Ordinary Seafarer (OS) Info

If you don’t have sea time for the AB, apply for an OS (Ordinary Seaman).

With this rating you can get an entry level job on a boat to the gain experience needed to advance.

Lifeboat Info

The mariner must also have Lifeboat or Lifeboat Limited rating to qualify as an AB.
