Radar Observer Unlimited Class
The Radar Observer Unlimited Class teaches mariners to use radar confidently for navigation and collision avoidance. This five-day Coast Guard-approved course satisfies the National training and examination requirements and STCW assessments for a Radar Observer Unlimited endorsement, which is valid on all waters.
Who Should Take This Course
This course is appropriate for mariners who:
- Need a Radar Observer endorsement for their Merchant Mariner Credential
- Serve or plan to serve as Master or Mate aboard a radar-equipped vessel
- Are pursuing a towing-vessel officer endorsement
- Want comprehensive, hands-on training in the safe and effective use of marine radar
A Radar Observer endorsement is required for a Master or Mate serving aboard a radar-equipped towing vessel 26 feet or more in length. It is also required for each person in the required complement of deck officers, including the Master, aboard a radar-equipped inspected vessel of 300 GRT or more.
Course Information
- Format: In-person classroom and simulator instruction
- Length: Five days
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Tuition: $1,000, including the $200 registration deposit
- Location: Columbia Pacific Maritime at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Oregon
- Availability: Generally offered once each month

Course Subjects and Practical Training
Course instruction includes:
- Radar theory, components, propagation, and limitations
- Radar setup, operating controls, and display modes
- Measuring range and bearing
- Radar navigation and position fixing
- Relative motion, manual plotting, closest point of approach, and time to closest point of approach
- Laws and regulations governing the use of radar
- The application of radar for navigation and collision avoidance
Hands-on instruction is provided using Buffalo Computer Graphics PC radar simulators. Students complete practical exercises involving radar navigation, collision avoidance, and the interpretation of relative motion.
Course Completion
Students must successfully complete the required written examinations and practical assessments.
Successful course completion satisfies the National training and examination requirements and STCW assessments for a Radar Observer Unlimited endorsement. Applicants must also meet all other Coast Guard requirements for issuance of the endorsement.
Before Enrolling
Course completion does not by itself guarantee issuance of a Merchant Mariner Credential. Applicants must meet all applicable Coast Guard credential requirements.
