Radar Observer Renewal
The one-day Radar Renewal Class is for mariners who need to renew a Radar Observer endorsement and do not qualify—or prefer not—to renew using sea service. Successful completion provides the Coast Guard-approved course certificate required to renew the endorsement.

Two Ways to Renew Your Radar Observer Endorsement
Renew With Sea Service
The Coast Guard may accept documentary evidence of one year of relevant sea service within the previous five years in a position that routinely uses radar for navigation and collision avoidance aboard radar-equipped vessels.
Review 46 CFR 11.480(g) for the current sea-service requirements.
Renew With an Approved Course
Mariners who do not have the required sea service may renew their Radar Observer endorsement by completing an appropriate Coast Guard-approved Radar Renewal course and submitting the course completion certificate with their Merchant Mariner Credential application.

Before Enrolling
This course is intended for mariners renewing an existing Radar Observer endorsement. Mariners seeking their first Radar Observer endorsement should take the five-day Radar Observer Unlimited Class.
Course completion satisfies the Coast Guard training requirement but does not by itself guarantee renewal of a Merchant Mariner Credential. Applicants must meet all applicable Coast Guard renewal requirements.
The course is delivered in English. Each student must have sufficient English-language proficiency to understand instruction, participate in activities, complete written assignments, and successfully complete the final examination.
