Master 100-ton Class

The Master 100-ton class is a ten-day in-person class for $1,300. The cost of this class will be increasing to $1,450 in October 2025, and $1,500 in January 2026. The class is scheduled Monday thru Friday over two consecutive weeks. Note the class is NOT scheduled over the weekend.

This class is approved for meeting the Coast Guard exam requirements for Master 25, 50, and 100-ton. Meaning NO EXAMS at the Coast Guard after passing the class. Additionally, it will also meet the exam requirements for the OUPV 6-pack captain too.

More about the Master 100-ton class

Firstly, this class includes the OUPV (6-pack captain) and the Master 25, 50, and 100-ton captain licenses. It also includes both Near Coastal and Inland routes. To explain, the Inland route includes all federally navigable inland waters of the United States. And the Near Coastal route includes all inland waters and near coastal ocean waters too. For the Master near coastal is within 200-miles of the US. For the OUPV it is within 100-miles of the US.

Secondly, this is the first in the three-class sequence. This sequence includes Firstly this Master class. Secondly, the Upgrade 100 to 200-ton class, and thirdly, the Apprentice Mate (steersman) of Towing class.

Lastly, the class includes instruction and exams in five subjects.

  • Safety.

The US Coast Guard approval for this class states:

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Master 100 Tons (COLPAC-281) course within one year of application will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j) (1) for original issuance, 46 CFR 10. 227(e)(1)(iii) for renewal, and 46 CFR 10.227(i) for reissuance of: A Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters); AND Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) (Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, or Inland Waters).

License Information

All applications for a captain license requires 90-days of recent experience. This means that 90 of the total days of required experience must be in the past 3-years. This recent experience can be on inland or near coastal waters, and it can be as operator or deckhand.

Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) License

With an OUPV license you can operate a small uninspected passenger vessel with six (6) or fewer passengers. This license is commonly known as the 6-pack captain because of the 6-passenger limit. This license is issued with either an inland or near coastal route.

OUPV Inland requires a total of 360-days experience in the operation of vessels.

OUPV Near Coastal requires a total of 360-days that includes 90-days on ocean waters. To explain, ocean waters mean past the end of the jetties.

Master 100-ton License

This license is issued with tonnage limitations of 25, 50, or 100-tons, depending on the experience of the applicant. View the appropriate checklist for tonnage information. This holder of this license can operate an OUPV on the route issued on the license. Additionally, they can operate inspected passenger vessels carry more than 6-passengers. And they can also captain other types of vessels too. Including workboats, crew boats, supply boats launches, and oil spill response vessels.
