MMC Renewal Course

The Merchant Mariner Credential is valid for 5-years. Consequently, the renewal period is anytime before it expires to one-year after it expires. There are three ways to renew. Firstly, the mariner can document 360-days of sea service experience in the past 5-years. Secondly, the mariner may take an MMC Renewal Course (AKA a license refresher course). Or thirdly, the mariner may take a comprehensive open book Coast Guard exam.

Approved Refresher Course License Refresher ($200 / 1-day)

This MMC renewal course will satisfy the renewal requirements for OUPV, or Master or Mate 25, 50, 100, or 200-ton. To clarify, this course replaces the experience requirement for renewal. On the other hand mariners able to document 360-days in the past five-years do not need this course to renew.

This License Refresher course is available any day the school is open, Monday through Sunday. Above all call Pat at 503-841-6066 for more information or to schedule this course.

MMC Renewal MMC Renewal – Radar Observer

Radar Observer endorsements expire every 5-years with the MMC. Consequently failure to renew a Radar Observer endorsement will result in removal of the endorsement from the MMC. However, regulations effective 2019 have added an alternative to taking a course for renewal.

The Coast Guard will accept on-board training and experience through acceptable documentary evidence of 1 year of relevant sea service within the last 5 years in a position that routinely uses radar for navigation and collision avoidance purposes on vessels equipped with radar as meeting the refresher or re-certification requirements.
