Full Apprentice Mate (steersman) Course

This course will satisfy the USCG exam requirements for Apprentice
Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels with an Inland or Near Coastal
route.

The Full Apprentice Mate (steersman) Course includes following
three-course sequence, and must be taken in consecutive order:
  • Master 100-ton
  • Upgrade Master 100 to 200-ton
  • Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessel Upgrade
Partical Apprentice Mate (steersman) Course

The Partial Upgrade Course will satisfy the Apprentice Mate
(Steersman) exam requirements for mariners holding a valid Master
100-ton Inland or Near Coastal endorsement and includes the
following two-course sequence, which must be taken in consecutive
order:
  • Upgrade Master 100 to 200-ton
  • Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessel Upgrade
Apprentice Mate (steersman) Upgrade Course

Mariners holding a valid Master 200-ton endorsement may satisfy the
exam requirements the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) by completing
the
Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade Course only.

This upgrade course will also satisfy the exam requirements for
adding Mate (Pilot) of Towing Near Coastal for Mariners holding a
valid Master of Towing Inland and a Master 200 GRT or greater
inspected vessel license.
Professional Requirements
The sea service requirements for Apprentice Mate (steersman) of
Towing
is 540-days that includes 360-days experience on towing
vessels, and 90-days experience on the requested Inland or Near
Coastal route. The remaining 180-days of experience may be on any
type or size of vessel.

The sea service requirements for
Mate (Pilot) of Towing is 900-days
that includes 360-days experience on towing vessels while holding
the Apprentice Mate (steersman) license.

The sea service requirements for
Master of Towing is 1440-days
that includes 540-days experience as Mate on towing vessels while
holding a valid license as Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels.

The Master or Mate of a towing vessel must hold a valid
Radar
Observer endorsement.
