Able Seaman Course Information
This US Coast Guard approved course will satisfy the written exams
and practical knot and splice exam for any Able Seaman rating
without taking any exams at the Coast Guard.

This course does not satisfy the training and exam requirements for
the Lifeboatman or Lifeboatman Limited ratings.

Subjects include Rules of the Road, compasses, US Aids to
Navigation, anchors and anchor gear, helmsman and helm
commands, line handling and line handling commands, seamanship
and seamanship terminology, and marlinespike seamanship.

There are no course prerequisites for the AB Course.
Professional Requirements for the Able Seaman
Able Seaman, or AB, is a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
National Rating Endorsement required to work on commercial
seagoing vessels greater than 100 GRT.

The AB is a rating for experienced mariners. The AB Special requires
a minimum of 360-days of sea service experience on ocean waters
OR navigable Inland waters.

In addition to meeting the sea service requirements for the AB rating
the mariner must also hold the Lifeboatman or Lifeboatman Limited
rating. This requires completion of a Lifeboatman or Proficiency in
Survival Craft (PSC) class. Columbia Pacific Maritime does not offer
the Lifeboatman or PSC course. We recommend
Compass Courses
in Edmonds, Washington for this course.

Individuals without sea service experience seeking employment
opportunities in the maritime industry should apply for the entry level
rating of Ordinary Seaman, or OS, rating. This rating does not require
any sea service experience or training courses.
